Wildlife at Tinalandia

The grounds of the reserve are classified as Tropical Wet Forest leading up to Premontane Wet Forest. This ecosystem contains wildlife from both the Andes lowlands and Andes highlands, making it one of the most biodiverse places on the planet.

Like similar ecosystems, there are very many different species of flora and fauna, but small numbers of each, which is to say that although you may not see large numbers of the same species, you are likely to see representatives of many. The dense vegetation can make it a challenge to spot animals, but keeping your eyes open and your senses alert will be sure to help you.

Your naturalist guide from Tinalandia will help you discover the hidden wonders of the reserve. Please notify us ahead of time if you have specific goals or classes of wildlife that you wish to encounter or study.

Tinalandia is best known for the over 350 species of birds found within its grounds and surroundings. Please take a look at our birding report, bird list, and bird photo gallery.

Butterflies are abundant at Tinalandia and several scientists have studied the amazing biodiversity in the reserve. See the butterfly list and photo gallery for in depth information.

Insect life has been well studied at Tinalandia as well.

Two new species of plants have been discovered in Tinalandia that now carry the name of our lodge:

Tinalandia

Onsite we maintain various reference materials, including guide books concerning the butterflies of Tinalandia, the birds, bats and flora, as well as a reference sheet of the trees, palms, and flowers of the region.
